Reclaiming aquifers with nanomaterials

Deltanova: The Politecnico in site Revolution

Restoring groundwater with a more effective and less expensive method compared to traditional ones. A goal achieved by the technologies developed by Deltanova, a Politecnico spinoff founded in May 2020 based on extensive research and experimentation experience using nanomaterials. Today, Deltanova offers innovative solutions to the problem of remediating polluted sites and groundwater, and continues to conduct research.

“Our company’s task,” states Carlo Bianco, researcher at DIATI and CEO of Deltanova, “is to develop and commercialize innovative reagents based on nanomaterials for the removal of pollutants from groundwater.”

From Engineering to Practice

Deltanova was founded by three people: besides Bianco, also Tiziana Anna Elisabetta Tosco and Rajandrea Sethi – both professors at DIATI. The spinoff stems from the vast experience of the Groundwater Engineering Research Group, dedicated to the applications of engineering to groundwater.

Nanoremediation: Invisible Technology, Global Impact

The company has developed a technology platform that involves the use of nanoparticles which, once injected into the ground, are capable of removing toxic and carcinogenic pollutants.

Use of technologies involving nanoparticles capable of removing toxic and carcinogenic pollutants once injected into the ground.

“We have engineered advanced approaches to create a highly stable colloidal suspension that makes it possible to effectively inject reactive nanoparticles into the subsoil,” explains Bianco. “Once the particles come into contact with the contaminants, they can transform or immobilize them, rendering them harmless.”

Patented Innovation: Aquirem

The research work led to the filing of five patents, including the highly innovative Aquirem approach. This technology uses liquid, eco-friendly reagents to synthesize nanomaterials directly in the subsoil, increasing remediation effectiveness even in low-permeability systems.

  • Effectiveness: Visible results just a few weeks after treatment.
  • Sustainability: Highly environmentally compatible reagents.
  • Efficiency: Drastic reduction in time and costs compared to “pump and treat” methods.

International Presence

To date, Deltanova has applied its technologies in the USA and several Italian regions, including Piedmont, Sicily, and Emilia-Romagna. The company is constantly looking for new investors and industrial partners to test cutting-edge solutions for tomorrow’s environmental challenges.
